The Living the Goodenough Life Podcast is now live – insert party emojis! Check out how I made it easy (from first recording to published in a week!), the gear and software I use, as well as where to listen to it.
How I made it easy
“What would this look like if it was easy?” is one of my favourite questions to ask myself. I’d recommend you try it too if you’re feel overwhelmed or trying something new and not sure where to start. Let me also say here that I might play a few video games, but I’m not a tech wizard either! So in this case, I chose three ways of making my podcast launch easy:
- I gave myself a short deadline. Originally I was going to stretch it out further into quarter one, but I decided I was mainly doing that because I was scared. So instead I decide to launch by the end of January. I picked the 29th because it’s a lucky number for me and decided that it will be what it will be by that date.
- I followed guides by people who have already done this. I’m not bad with Instagram, blog posts etc. as I’ve been doing those for several years. But this is the first podcast I’m creating. So to make things simple, I downloaded two checklists by people who specialise in this kind of thing and just followed their instructions:
- The Smart Passive Income Podcast Cheat Cheat (more detailed – would recommend!);
- The Wit & Wire Podcast Launch Checklist (more of an overview).
- I chose a format that required less work. Inspired by Sam Laura Brown (whose ears are probably ringing from all the times she’s already been mentioned on my podcast…), I chose to produce minimally-edited chatty podcasts. I have an A4 page of notes, with a “hook”, a standard intro, three main parts (with bullet points within them) and the “homework” (i.e. the call to action) for my listeners. I hit record, talk for 30-45 minutes, then end the recording. I don’t edit out the bits where I mispronounce things or have a sip of water. Easy and it feels more genuine to me (I’m personally not a fan of overly scripted or polished podcasts).
The podcast gear I use
Again, rather than getting into procrasti-researching and overwhelm, I just went with recommendations I felt I could trust. In this case, I bought the podcasting gear recommended by Pat Flynn (I featured him in my Top 5 thought leaders you need to follow if you have an online business post).
1 – Samson Q2U Recording and Podcasting Pack – USB/XLR Dynamic Microphone with Accessories*;
2 – Knox Microphone Shock Mount* (to reduce any vibrations etc. affecting the sound quality);
3 – Adjustable Microphone Stand* (to help get the microphone as close as possible to your mouth);
4 – InnoGear Microphone Pop Filter* (this helps plosive sounds be less aggressive to your listener);
5 – Microsoft Surface Laptop 3* (you of course do not need a new computer to record your podcast; this is the closest one to the one I use on Amazon: mine has 512GB storage instead of 256GB).
(Note: this blog post contains Amazon* and Buzzsprout* affiliate links. If you click a link marked with an asterisk and make a purchase, I may earn a commission at no cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work! Another way of supporting me (and yourself!) is to join my membership, nudge nudge.)
My current podcast workflow
- I check my Living the Goodenough Life review and plan document for content ideas.
- I outline my podcast episode on one page in my journal.
- I connect my microphone to my laptop.
- I hit record on Audacity.
- I export the file in a WAV format (until last week I didn’t even know that existed!).
- I submit it to Auphonic to improve the audio quality.
- I add the now improved audio file to Buzzsprout* (who then share it to all the podcast players: Apple Podcast, Spotify, etc.).
- I create a blog post for each episode with the show notes (an overview of what was said + links to the things mentioned in the episode).
- I share the podcast episode on social media when it’s out (I’m launching on a Friday, but I’m aiming to have new episodes every Wednesday)… Tadaaa, done!
