7 trending interior design styles + how to incorporate them in your home

While I love enduring design styles like Scandi or mid-century modern, sometimes it’s fun to mix it up a bit! Therefore, let me introduce… this year’s trending interior design styles!

Some of the current trending interior design styles originate from a desire for whimsy in our post-lockdown high-inflation world, and some other are a merge of existing interior design styles to create something fresh and original.

Vegan clothing brands to watch

I’ve ordered the following interior design styles based on when they started trending, from oldest to most recent, so make sure you read until the end, to gather trending design inspiration for your home!

As a side note, some of these styles are a bit “out there”, so pick and choose what you like and leave the rest. 😊

  1. New traditional
  2. Scandifornian
  3. Postmodern
  4. Carnivalcore
  5. Organic modern / modern organic
  6. Mermaidcore
  7. Barbiecore

New traditional

Traditional is getting a makeover! Simpler lines and shapes bring traditional decor into the 21st century, while maintaining a timeless elegance. The idea is to pair back on the ornementation so the room doesn’t seem so busy, but still looks classic.

Fiora Pillow

Set of classic table lamps

Mood Lines Wall Art

Fern Bookcase

Studioilse Linen Sofa

Cole & Son Nuvolette Wallpaper

Colorful Glass Mister

Fern Buffet

Kaia Marble Plinth Block Large Coffee Table

Norma Bar Cart

Le Creuset Pepper Mill

Brushed Brass Gold Decorative Cabinet Knobs

Home Therapy

Maude Wall Cabinet

Fenna Bed

Esmeralda Marble Tissue Box

Scandifornian

So this is essentially the Scandinavian design style… but with palm trees! I’ve gone a bit heavy on the jute and woven textures as I feel they embody the sand colour from the Californian style and the natural elements and neutral palette of the Scandi style.

Hand Woven Jute Area Rug

Wildsam Field Guide: Pursuits

Capri Blue Coastal Rattan-Wrapped Jar Candle

Hudson Desk

California Beach Wall Art

Pastel blue paper and wood lamp

Boho Rattan Knobs

Heatherfield Dresser

Round Rattan Swivel Rocking Chair

Postmodern

Fun shapes and bold colours mark a departure from the neutral-heavy form-first interiors that were common in the 2010s. If you want something playful that makes a bold statement, postmodern might be for you! I’ve included some tamer items that you could include in your home to avoid going 100% zany.

Effie Dining Chair

White U-Shaped Vase for Flowers

Wooden pendant light in mustard, grey and copper

Metaverse Dream

TILT Lamp

Checkerboard Throw Blanket

Lulu Floor Lamp

Jenny Enamel Sconce

Mona Storage Bed

Mint and Lilac Cotton Punch Needle Tufted Cushion

Handmade ceramic mug

Frances Mirror

Handmade ceramic wavy vase

Pernille Rosenkilde Flower Coupe Glasses, Set of 4

Carnivalcore

So this one was definitely a stretch… As my favourite interior design YouTuber Nick Lewis says, this is probably not a style that normal people are going to adopt wholesale. But hey, if you’ve got nice memories of going to the circus or the fun fair, here’s some inspiration to bring that nostalgia into your home.

Maeve Leopard Bath Towel Collection

Vietri Amalfitana Striped Cereal Bowl

Carnival Circus Light Up Sign

Cheetah Hanging Planter

Colourful Carnival Love Sign

Claudia Handle

Ellen Merchant Indoor/Outdoor Seat Cushion

Demeter Dressing Mirror

Organic modern / modern organic

Organic modern is a softer take on the all-grey almost museum-like modern interiors we saw in the 2010s. Curved shapes and natural textures make the space more welcoming, while keeping a modern feel.

Natural linen slim table lamp, with wooden base

Swirled Drum Reclaimed Coffee Table

Mooney Vase

Elena Coffee Table

Bubbled Irregular Shape Vase For Dry Plants

Sonali Console Table

Porcelain Table Lamp

Mono Outdoor Dining Table

Marble Coaster for Drinks

Vietri Incanto Large Serving Bowl

Texture & Shape 2 Wall Art

Modern Cushion Bed

Sculptural Marble Decorative Objects, Set of 2

Rattan Rocking Chair

Tufted Lorna Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Mermaidcore

I’m kind of surprised to say this, but these items are my favourite out of all the trending interior design styles I researched for this blog post! This interior design style is probably trending because of the Little Mermaid live action adaptation. (Have you seen it Tell me in the comments!)

Velvet Shell Chair

The Waterfall Bubble Chandelier

Blue linen table mats with scallop edges

Sea Glass Knob

Wavy edge plant pot

Shells Wall Art

Agata Ceramic Side Table

Pettini Vase

Peacock Rattan Dining Chairs, Set of 2

Venus Wall Sconce

Handmade Ceramic Decorative Tray

Large Round White Terrazzo Tray

Bubble Glazed Container Candle in Blue with Gold

Crystal Faux Pearl Curtain Tie Backs

Old Havana Salt & Pepper Shakers

Small Jute Wall Hanging Planter

Aquamarine Beaded Flush Mount

Swirled Glass Table Lamp

Maeve Lobster Mural

Luci Rattan Bar Cart

Capri Blue Volcano Tin Candle

Barbiecore

So Barbiecore is of course tied to the craze around the new Barbie film, but I think it’s also part of a wider movement around things that are unapologetically girly and feminine, like all the enthusiasm around the Taylor Swift Eras tour.

In any case, here are some touches of pink you can add to your home that go with a variety of personal styles:

Handmade ceramic mug with wiggle handle design and pink glaze

London in Bloom

Washed Linen Duvet Cover

Fringe Studio Boxed Notecard Set

McCall Chenille Accent Chair

Spencer Sofa

Dakota Melamine Side Plates, Set of 4

Adult Paint-By-Numbers Kit

Megan Carn Pawty Dogs Poker Card Deck

Scalloped Jute Hartley Rug

Gilded Rim Flute

Alicia Art Print

Maeve Scallop Pillow

Cat Governess Wall Art

Cecily Velvet Pillow

Alimrose Suitcase Set

Otherland Stonefruit Boxed Candle

Coastal Rattan Bistro Chairs, Set of 2

Phoebe Handle

Textured Piazza Shams, Set of 2

Marcello Velho Catwalk Petite Accent Chair

Anthropologie Maria Gingham Wallpaper
